2 in 3 UK local business websites aren't ready for paid ads
We audited 123 independent trades, hair and beauty, and dental websites in ten UK cities. If they started advertising tomorrow, most would pay for clicks they couldn't measure or convert.
Tracking is the biggest gap
Only 12% of homepages carry a Meta, Google Ads or TikTok tag. A further 24% use a tag manager that may load one, which can't be confirmed from the page. That leaves 64% with no ad tracking at all: an ad platform sending them traffic could neither optimise for enquiries nor report what the spend achieved.
Where tracking does exist, consent often doesn't: 32% of all sites load tracking tags with no recognisable cookie consent tool or Google Consent Mode, which limits what Google Ads can measure for UK visitors.
A quarter give visitors no way in
24% of homepages have no enquiry form, no tappable phone number, no booking tool, no WhatsApp link and no checkout. Among the rest, small frictions are common.
Trust and basics
The privacy policy gap matters more than it looks: Meta and Google both expect one on pages that collect personal details, and lead-generation ads can be rejected without it.
By sector
| Sector | Audited | Median score | Not ready |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dental | 44 | 75 | 52% |
| Trades & home services | 41 | 69 | 73% |
| Hair & beauty | 38 | 62 | 76% |
| All | 123 | 69 | 67% |
Dental practices come out best, with roughly half ready for paid traffic. In trades and in hair and beauty, about three in four are not.
The fix that matters most
For 42% of sites, the single highest-priority fix is installing an ad platform tag. For 24% it is adding any way to enquire. Both are hours of work, not weeks, and both decide whether ad spend can work at all.
One more finding: of the 150 sampled businesses, 12 list a website whose address no longer exists. One in twelve map listings points customers at a dead link.
Method and limits
- Businesses: random sample of independent businesses (no
brandtag) with a website listed in OpenStreetMap, within ten city areas (London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, Glasgow, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Nottingham, Sheffield), 50 per sector. OpenStreetMap data © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL. - Audited: 123 of 150. Not audited: 12 dead domains, 5 broken HTTPS certificates, 4 error pages, 3 timeouts, 3 other.
- Each homepage was fetched once, in October 2026, and its HTML analysed without running JavaScript. Tags loaded only by scripts, or through a tag manager, are not counted as present; tag-manager sites are reported separately.
- "Not ready" means the audit found a blocking issue (for example no ad tracking, no way to enquire, not mobile-ready) or a score under 55. Many of these businesses may not advertise at all; the question is whether paid traffic would work if they did.
- Homepages only. A business may run ads to a separate landing page.
- Individual businesses are not named.
